Eat and Sleep

When I created Mary’s Crescent it seemed to naturally fall into a four-day walk; it is 47 miles long.

The first 2 days are just under 12.9 miles each and the next 2 days are 10.3 and 10.9 respectively:

Portchester to Droxford 12.9 miles

Droxford to Buriton 12.9 miles

Buriton to Chilgrove 10.3 miles

Chilgrove to Chichester 10.9 miles

Below are some of my top hints and tips for each day of the walk. Past that, you'll find a longer list of links with some of the best places to visit, eat and stay on the route.

I'd advise planning your journey ahead and getting everything booked in. You can always email me for extra tips.

It goes without saying that the countryside code should be followed and care taken to avoid ticks which may be carrying Lyme disease. The government have created the following useful guidance:

Day 1

You start at Portchester, either arriving by train to Portchester railway station (0.9 miles from Portchester Castle) or by car and leaving your car in one of the side streets where there are no parking restrictions.

There is no suitable accommodation in Portchester but there are hotels nearby – The Marriot Portsmouth and Premier Inn Port Solent, where you can stay prior to starting the walk at Portchester.

On your first day you walk to Droxford - there is no accommodation actually in Droxford, but there is good pub accommodation nearby.

You must decide whether to have a slightly shorter walk and stop at The White Lion Soberton (0.5 miles before Droxford) or you can stay at The Bucks Head in Meonstoke (1.7 miles beyond Droxford).

Another option is to stay just north of Wickham at Woodlands Cottage Farm (1.6 miles north of Wickham, 4 miles before Droxford)

When I walked the whole Crescent with two friends we choose to stop at the Bucks Head in Meonstoke. There was time to visit both St Mary churches and have a brief look at Portchester Castle and the Royal Armoury. We stopped for a quick pub lunch in Wickham too. My companions didn’t have to faff about checking the way to go as I can now do it blindfold and this must have improved our overall speed!

Day 2

This is much simpler, your choice of places to stay in Buriton are either The Nest Hotel or The Five Bells.

Day 3

Again very simple, the only place to stay is at The White Horse

The surrounding area is an accommodation desert, so plenty of opportunities for a bright and enterprising individual!

Day 4

You’re now in Chichester and spoilt for choice! I have given the Cathedral accommodation website because I wanted to support the Cathedral but there are plenty of other options.
